Richard Conner

Hi, everyone. Welcome to Inspire to run Podcast. I’m here with two special guests here today. Lauren Amendola is the executive director of the Arthritis Foundation in Connecticut. She has spent her almost 20 year career in the health nonprofit industry, and as an arthritis warrior herself. Jennifer Castro is a relationship banker with people’s united, a division of m&t Bank, Jen is known to be a people person who enjoys helping others in her spare time she enjoys being out in nature, bowling, traveling, being a health coach kayaking, lots of great stuff here, Jennifer was diagnosed with arthritis in her mid 30s, and is here to share her story. So welcome to the show, Lauren, and Jen. Thank you. So for listeners, this is a follow on conversation. If you heard one of our previous episodes, we had Lauren on the show from Arthritis Foundation to talk about the importance of kind of spreading awareness about arthritis and living with arthritis and a lot of the resources that the Foundation offers. So we’re excited to have Lauren back on the show and also hear a little bit about Jen story. So Laura, for those listeners who may not have heard the previous episode, maybe just share a little bit about yourself and the Arthritis Foundation.

Lauren Amendola

Sure, the Arthritis Foundation is really the world’s only health organization focused just on arthritis and truly boldly trying to find a cure. And so through our science research, and so many of our other mission pillars, we’re able to put critical funds towards that. But while we’re trying to do all this great science and look for a cure, we’re also able to help our warriors live yes and say yes, every day, and that’s through connections and resources and tools. And so that’s really what we’re trying to do here and connect with everybody.

Richard Conner

That’s really wonderful. And I remember through our last conversation, it was really insightful for me to learn a little bit more about arthritis, and just the number of people who have it, which I think is the numbers over 50 million people are living with arthritis today. And it was also insightful to learn that no matter how old you are, right, it’s possible that you might have arthritis, and it just doesn’t affect only a certain population of people. So just a lot of great learnings and really appreciate, you know, all the work that you do with the Arthritis Foundation.

Lauren Amendola

Thank you. Yeah, and actually, I think last time we recorded it was a figure through the CDC that 54 million Americans are living with arthritis. And now we’re using the figure of nearly 60 million Americans. And so that’s one in four. And think about that, you know, in your neighborhood and your workplace and your family, one in four Americans is living with a doctor diagnosed arthritic disease. And And as we’ve talked about before, arthritis is an umbrella term. So there really encompasses over 100 different types of sub diseases that fall under that arthritis umbrella, including children. And you’re right, this doesn’t matter your age, race, gender, and there’s actually a higher percentage of people under 65 that have arthritis than over 65. And so we’re really looking at some, as you were saying, it’s kind of eye opening, and breathtaking statistics. And this also includes children. And also, it includes children who aren’t on special pediatric medications. They’re taking medications that adults are obviously at different doses. But I mean, this is really something that people need to be a little bit more aware of. And so that’s why we’re glad to be here and bring that awareness.

Richard Conner

Thank you for sharing that and let’s let’s really dive into the conversation. So we have Jen here today our special guest, again, was was diagnosed diagnosed with arthritis. And Jen, I’m really excited for you to share your story because I really believe that you can help inspire others to really kind of take control of their health and fitness and inspire them to to hopefully run right at that if that’s Third thing if that’s what they want to get into, but more importantly, to take control of their health and fitness. So let’s hear a little bit about you. So just tell us a little bit about kind of your story, maybe even pre diagnosis.

Jennifer Castro

Sure. So basically, and thank you so much for having me by. But I think this is a great opportunity to let people know that there is an option for, you know, health like to help them along their way, their journey. And it’s just amazing to be in this community. So I’m so thankful, and I’m grateful to be here. So I started off, you know, kind of tired and kind of, like, you know, thinking that there might be something wrong and going on in my body, and just not really being aware of that. But just kind of feeling like something wasn’t right. So I went to the doctor in my late 20s. And they’re like, you’re fine, you know, everything is good, you’re just a little bit tired, because you’re a busy mom, you know, you’re working and so on and so forth. And I really felt something was, you know, not right. And so I actually went through like a very bitter divorce and kind of had, you know, life happened. And I just kept kind of going to my doctor, are different doctors, actually. And then one of the doctors was like, you know, you really should see a rheumatologist. And I said, Okay, you know, I’m open to that. And so I booked the appointment, and the woman was like, she could tell that I was very anxious about what was going on. And she’s like, you know, did anyone ever say that you have, like an inflammatory condition called arthritis? And I said, No, I said, but I just felt that something wasn’t just right with my body. And she said, No, you are, you are 100%. Correct. And you have inflammation. And there is hope for you. You know, there’s definitely treatments out there. But you know, you did the right thing by listening to your body, you kept going after that. So you knew something wasn’t right. And no matter what you did, you know, something wasn’t right. You kept going after that. So that was really comforting at the same time, but also unnerving, because I’m like, okay, you know, I’m sort of on the younger ish spectrum, from what they’ve been telling me people think it’s like an older person’s condition. And so I was like, Well, how do I, you know, what do I do with this? I had so many questions and having two children and going through a divorce, and so on and so forth. It was like, Where do I go. And the bank that I worked for, currently, M&T Bank, previously was People’s United, they had a wonderful program, where they worked with the Arthritis Foundation, and we could, you know, pay a couple dollars and wear jeans to work on Fridays. And I thought that was really cool, like, Oh, awesome, you know, we can dress down support a great cause. And what I didn’t know was that I would learn so much from this organization. And I would kind of reignite the passion that I had for running. I had done their couch to 5k program, previous to this. And, and that was, that was good on my body, because it was very, it was like a slower pace. And I could, you know, take longer rest times in between when I needed to, but it was very, it was good for me. So it was really nice to be able to kind of come full circle with the donations, being able to support this organization, and also wear jeans to work and then reignite my passion for running. So that’s kind of a little bit of backdrop where I came from, as far as being diagnosed, and kind of how I got into the Arthritis Foundation and kind of connected.

Richard Conner

That’s wonderful, wonderful story. And, you know, it’s really encouraging to hear that even with the diagnosis that didn’t stop you, you, you really took the advice. And again, kind of took your your health and fitness in your own hands. And that’s really great to hear that you went to running as one of the outlets. So, you know, tell me a little bit about kind of the diagnosis part. Again, you know, you may not be in that age group where it’s perceived where you’d have arthritis. So, you know, what was that? Like? Did the doctors maybe dismissed that at first? Or, or did you dismiss it and not even kind of explore that? Like, how did that work?

Jennifer Castro

Yeah, so it would, it would be like an example is I would go to the gym, and I’d work out trying to lose weight. And I would be like, so tired, and like abnormally tired. And my my trainer would be like, you know, I have other clients and they’re really not as tired as you. And I would be like, okay, you know, like, kind of like, like, super analytical, like, am I working too hard? Like, am I not working hard enough? Like, you know, and I wasn’t seeing the results that I was looking for. So I’m like, well, can’t do that. I’m working too hard because I’m not seeing the results physically that I’m looking for. You know, so and that led me to, I’m currently a health coach and I’m, I’m, I’ve lost you know, quite a bit of weight. through an Nikken nutritional program, which has helped me tremendously. And the reason it’s been so successful for me is that it’s not focused on physical health, it’s focused on nutrition and macronutrients. And that for somebody who has arthritis, like myself, is one of the biggest foundations is nutrition, it’s because when you can’t work out and your body is tired, and you’re going through those times when you’re achy, and the last thing you think about, honestly, is going to the gym, you know, you’re, you’re thinking about eating right, and just getting your inflammation down, that’s what’s going to help you. So when I went to the doctor, and I would go, you know, say, Hey, I’m like, really tired, or I, I really have to take a, you know, a break and recover from my workouts. And they’re like, well, that’s not normal, like you, you have a time to recover, you’re sore. And I’m like, No, but I’m really sore. You know, so that was kind of one of the pivotal points that led me back to the doctor and saying, hey, something’s not right. Or my joints just hurting, like, I would get up in the morning, and my joints would ache and I would get out of bed. And I’m like, and I asked my fiance, or, you know, people, do you hurt when you get out of bed in the morning? And they’re like, no, why? And I’m like, oh, okay, you know, maybe I’m just like, experiencing things or, you know, things like that kept happening. And I, I just missed it for a long time, because again, the age factor, but then it got a little bit more and more, you know, things that kept happening that were like, you know, almost coincidental, you could say, and then it started coming to the point of I was, you know, tired at work. And I was like, No, you know, this is, this is where I draw the line. And I’m very ambitious. And I have a lot of things that I do when I’m very active by nature, and constantly want to do things. And that’s getting in the way of that. I don’t, I want to live, you know, I want to experience as much as I can. I love doing five K’s I love the couch to 5k program in particular. And if it’s gonna, like, stop me or prevent me from doing that, then we need to fix us. So like I said, being a health coach, I’m able to, you know, help people and help myself to get, you know, running, it’s so much easier if you have less weight on you. I’m just being completely honest. And you know, kind of working with that first. And I’m focusing on nutrition, and I’m leaning more towards the natural side of things. I’m very, like, holistic, and try to kind of draw from that and really listen to my body. So that’s kind of the route that I took.

Richard Conner

Yeah, I appreciate you sharing that. And I’m thinking about, you know, as you’re saying, or as you asked your boyfriend or husband, is it hurt when you get out of bed? In the morning? I’m thinking to myself, yeah, it does after I do, you know, 30 mile race kind of running up and down a mountain? Yeah, for a few days. But normally, no, not really. So but for you, you didn’t really know any different, right? Because it was, you know, regular occurrence. For us. That’s really interesting.

Lauren Amendola

Right? I think Jen, sorry to interrupt is, is the perfect example of what we wanted the foundation to be able to live yes, say yes. And you knew that these are the hurdles, but then what can we do to help this and these, I don’t want to live this way. So how can I help myself with the fatigue? And, you know, that is something a lot of people don’t talk about, as, you know, a side effect beyond the joints and the pain? And so you are like our champion of Yes, though. It’s great.

Richard Conner

Thank you. And I’m wondering how many others are out there where, you know, they’ve made up their mind? Yes, I want to be more active. But I just don’t feel it right. I don’t I have these aches, or whatever the case may be. And, you know, it sounds like that’s probably one of the first areas that they need to get checked out first, before they start, you know, physical activity, because maybe, maybe part of it is that they’re not active, and maybe part of it is some underlying condition that they don’t know about, like arthritis or something else.

Jennifer Castro

Exactly. And it’s very tough. Like I said, when you’re in pain, you know, especially with myself, I was very overweight, and you know, being very overweight, and you just you think, Okay, I’ve got to get there. And you I mean, I think intuitively, I knew what to do, you know, I knew I had to lose weight. And you know, I knew that, but it was kind of like, well, how what’s the route that I’m going to take to get there, like I know how to get from I know I’m at point A and I have to get point B but how do I get there? You know, and you have to get those you have to have the right people at the right places and the right you know, guidance and having as much as I didn’t appreciate it at the time of having a diagnosis. It really it gave me that kind of like direction, because then I knew where to focus my energy as far as Okay, I have inflammation so then I can realize what I can do, and kind of work backwards. So what do I do to decrease inflammation? So it gave me like, Yes, I have, you know, a diagnosis but how do I work? backwards to kind of, like, undo that, if you will. And, you know, working with my doctor and, you know, working with a nutritionist, and you know, being a health coach and stuff, I can do that because I can say, Okay, what’s causing my inflammation and kind of, you know, is there a medicine is there, you know, a particular activity or a stretch, even, that would relieve some tension or pressure. And it, I mean, it just, it’s amazing what even a stretch can do, you know, to be honest, after even a good run, and you just stretch and you’re just like, not only to relieve the pressure, but it’s also mental, and a lot of it was, okay, I can, not only can I run a 5k. But I can also live with a diagnosis of arthritis every single day, running was very mental. I never thought I could, I never thought I would be a runner, especially with, you know, having arthritis and being a little bit more fatigued than a typical person. You know, that was a very, very big mental hurdle to overcome.

Richard Conner

Yeah, and that’s, you know, I’m truly interested in what you just said there, because this is something that I’m just fascinated by, is your mindset. So I first off, I love your mindset, I love kind of how you approach these obstacles that you’ve had, and you won’t let them stand in your way. And you’re finding these ways to to still move forward. I’m curious, is there was there kind of a turning point for you? Did you say, like, one day, this is it, I’m going to, I’m gonna figure this out. You know, was that a moment or was it kind of just kind of overtime, you just kind of went down this path and curious.

Jennifer Castro

So I have a phenomenal support system. And I have, like a coach who is just phenomenal, and by my side all the time, and she’s amazing. And she is like the springboard and helps me throw. So I definitely have people in my corner who are constantly cheering for me and who are thinking you strong. And it’s so important to be around people who have your back and support you and just love you unconditionally, and want the best for you. And so that definitely has gotten me through a lot. And going through a divorce. That’s very tough. I scale a lot of things against that. Like, okay, I went through that I went, it was a really hard time, a lot of court stuff, I was a single mom, I had a lot a lot of moving parts. There’s, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever been through my entire life. And I draw a lot of strength from that, because there was a lot that came out of that. And a lot of mental toughness that came out of that. And I’ve always been a person who is inspired by other people working through things. And if I can inspire somebody, that’s all that I want. I want somebody else to have a better life, I want somebody else to work through things, I want somebody else to succeed, and I want somebody else to win. My coach told me and tells me all the time, if your boys can see you doing one thing that really hit me hard for them to see me winning be a mom that wins that is in their kid’s corner, and that will fight for them. And I am I believe that for people who have arthritis, I believe that you can win on a daily basis. And sometimes that winning is a small battle. And sometimes it’s a very large one. And sometimes it’s controlling the inflammation. And sometimes it’s it’s running a 5k. But every day you have to win, and you have to keep going. That’s my that’s my that’s my belief system.

Richard Conner

Thank you for sharing that. That’s really wonderful. And, you know, we have the same goals, we want to inspire inspire people as well. And yeah, so I believe everybody can do. And, again, that’s one of the things that fascinates me to really understand what drives and motivates people. Because I see folks that might be the exact same position, but one person makes a decision to move forward and one person may not. And I want, you know, through this through this podcast, through this community and through your story, it’d be able to help people, you know, take that next step. So I really appreciate you sharing your story. And, you know, I want to I want to I want to hear more about the health coach, part of your your life and some other things. But I’ll turn it over to Lauren for a moment, just to you know, talk a little bit more about the resources offered through Arthritis Foundation. And you know, we talked a little bit, you know, Jen mentioned about her coaching community and I know, you tried to do similar right through build a community through Arthritis Foundation. So we could talk a little bit about that.

Lauren Amendola

Yeah, I mean, that is truly what we are is a community and we want people to be able to turn to the foundation locally and be able to connect and make those connections online or in person at different educational series and information that we can provide and that What I love about my job too is being able to connect people with others connect them with those tools and resources we have. A lot of them are available online@arthritis.org lots of resources, toolkits in different languages and of all different topics and covering everything. And so I’m proud that we have all that for the community, and we’re able to connect and get you know, everyone what they need. And I think, you know, hearing Jen and I hope people listening to especially those who are arthritis warriors, are inspired by what Jen is saying, and find something and your when or your yes, in a day may just be going to the mailbox and getting getting the mail. And so I also don’t want people to be nervous that even a couch to 5k. Or running some people may think that’s really out of the realm, but there are small wins. And you could find that, yes, and that positivity every day. And you know, that’s what the Foundation wants to do with all of our connections and our community. And we’re really trying to build that up. And that’s why we’re here.

Richard Conner

Absolutely. And I love what you said about running because for some folks, it might seem scary, or I can’t do that, or I don’t know how to or I don’t like running. So so it’s great that you mentioned that. And then of course, you sharing your story about your runner when you didn’t think you could be so, you know, Lauren, along those lines, I know there has been a number of events throughout the year, that Arthritis Foundation hosts and you specifically in the Connecticut chapter, you know, can you talk about a little bit about maybe what’s coming up in terms of events.

Lauren Amendola

So we do have our last big event of the year, and that’s on December 11. It’s our annual jingle bell run. So this is a 5k family fun, festive event that we do across the country. And so we do have one here in Connecticut, and we’re so excited to have Jen be one of our honorees, and really kind of representing her story and sharing that with everyone. But this is an event that you could run the whole five PE or you could walk it or jog it. I mean, we’re we’re taking everyone to be part of this, a lot of people come and walk with the kids or come and cheer other people on. And we’re partnering with you, Richard on, you know, helping those who want to go couch to 5k. So if you want to come out and run that we’re here to help and support that. And we’re going to give you those tools and those resources. But if you want to come out and walk and not be timed or seeing it, that’s fine, too. And so this is such a fun event to kind of end our year have all of our fundraising events and special family days. And people come out and they dress up and have lots of fun. And so we’re excited to partner together on that and be able to have the resources at any level that you want to be part of it.

Richard Conner

I love that I love that I love how we’re of course, incorporating running but also supporting the arthritis community. And so that is really wonderful. So we’ll certainly share those resources, information on how to sign up for the race, as well as couch to 5k program for those who haven’t run five cable for so we’ll have that information available and definitely here to help you along your journey. So really looking forward to you know, this event Lauren, and, and Jen as well. So Jen, you know, kind of coming back to you just to kind of close out the conversation here, we really want to talk a little bit about kind of what you’re doing as a health coach and how you’re helping others, you know, kind of outside of your arthritis journey here.

Jennifer Castro

Yeah, absolutely. I did want to circle back I was to kind of piggyback on what Lauren was saying about the, you know, 5k and running. I remember when I was going through like some of my arthritis, kind of like about you know, and it was very, it was intense and I was in a lot of pain, but I wanted to run so bad. And I’d never run a 5k before I remember I would just go to one of the races and I would just go and I would look around at the people and I would be like oh my goodness you know I would kind of like people watching away and so I would just encourage anybody even if you have arthritis or you have inflammation or even if you’re just curious about running about a 5k or you know any other program just go out and watch a race you know, it’s just so inspiring to see people running that helped me anyway so I just wanted to mention that but yeah, so I decided that I was going to embark on a journey to you know, lose some weight and it was more of a for health reasons. You know, obviously you know looking great is amazing but feeling great is even more amazing. I wanted to feel that I wanted to not have so much pressure on my joints because I really know how much that means. And when you walk down stairs or you know just get out of bed in the morning. The extra pressure not on your joints. It feels So much better. And I mean, I remember where I lost the first 10 pounds, I was like, Oh, that’s awesome, it feels so good. And I didn’t notice the difference. Now I’m down 20. And now I’m approaching 30. And it’s just amazing to be able to just notice that difference in the feeling. And so I help other people do the exact same thing. So I focus on macro, nutrient dense meals, and the timing is so super important. Getting the water into your diet is super important. It’s just a, it’s like a package deal. Everything that we put into one, because at the end of the day, you just you need to get better, and you’re worth it, and you have to win. That’s just what it’s about. So that’s how I run my health coaching business. That’s my motto. And my clients are feeling amazing. And, you know, they’re able to just feel better all around. And that’s what it’s all about is just helping people. And, you know, running a 5k is like, it’s kind of like dessert, it’s so fun, and the energy is so high. And you can actually just, you know, it’s enjoyable. And when you have less weight. So I’m looking forward to hopefully running the jingle bell, the 5k. And getting back up to that level. So very excited to be part of this. But yeah, it’s a wonderful journey.

Richard Conner

That’s wonderful. And I’m looking forward to running the race as well. I will say I normally don’t run races this late in the year, but for the Arthritis Foundation, I’m gonna be there. So yeah. Talk to me into it.

Lauren Amendola

It has snowed a couple of years during it for real. So you know, but that’s kind of fun. It goes with the theme. And you know, no pressure on it being you know, this crazy race. It’s just a lot of fun to.

Richard Conner

That’s wonderful. All right. So you know, kind of as we wind down, one question I love to ask our guests is, what is the one thing you would say to our listeners to help inspire them to run? So, Jen, I’d love to hear your perspective.

Jennifer Castro

Just keep going and do one step at a time. Literally, if that one step for you is just getting to a race and just looking at people and seeing others when that is I try to do one thing a day that inspires me, I will look at an inspirational story, I will look at a weight loss journey and transformation. I’m somebody who didn’t run before that runs. Now, I always do something every single day that inspires me. So that is what I would say always do that every single day.

Richard Conner

Wonderful. Thank you so much, Jen, how can our listeners find you and follow your journey online?

Jennifer Castro

Um, so you can find me on Facebook. I’m on Jan Castro. That’s kind of like my main source right now is Facebook.

Richard Conner

Okay, wonderful. And Lauren, how about you and the Arthritis Foundation?

Lauren Amendola

Well, you could go to arthritis.org It knows where you are with your zip code. But you can also search Connecticut and that will come up with all local events, contact information, anything that’s happening even in the tri state area. And for our jingle bell run again, which is on Sunday, December 11. That’s in Madison, Connecticut, you can go to jbr.org/connecticut.

Richard Conner

Wonderful, wonderful. So I’ll certainly include all that information in the show notes to make it easy for our listeners to find. Lauren Jan really enjoyed this conversation really inspiring. Love the stories, the resources to to help our community. And I just want to thank you again for coming on the show. Thank you for having me. All right. Well have a great day.

Jennifer Castro

Thank you too.
